There are numerous powder coating types – most commonly acrylic, epoxy, fluoropolymers, and polyester. There are also slight variations between different formulations, with special additives and agents mixed in to enhance the performance and/or protective properties.
As you can see, it’s primarily the choice of additives, extenders, and fillers that separate high-performance powder coatings from more conventional formulations.
Understanding the protective properties of high-performance powder coatings requires a bit of knowledge on what corrosion is, and how it develops. Basically, corrosion occurs whenever metals chemically react with water, oxygen, chemicals, or other contaminants – any external substance that is chemically reactive with elements in the metal alloy. As elements in the external substance react with elements on the metal surface, corrosion results in the form of rust, oxidation, or other types of material breakdown.
